The Kiwi Duo Who Launched A Dynasty
November 14, 1999, Mount Panorama. Two New Zealanders, both chasing their second Bathurst victory, delivered Gibson Motorsport its first Bathurst win since 1992 and ignited a seven-year Holden winning streak that still stands as the record.
Steven Richards made history that day. His 1998 win in the Stone Brothers Falcon EL was special, but 1999 carried real weight: he became the first driver ever to win consecutive Bathursts for different manufacturers, Ford in 1998 and Holden in 1999. No one had done it before.
His co-driver, Greg Murphy, earned his second Great Race crown (his first came in 1996 with Craig Lowndes in the HRT Commodore). Starting 12th, the pair worked their way forward all afternoon in the Wynn's-backed VT Commodore, shadowing the dominant #18 Shell Falcon of Paul Radisich and Steve Ellery. Radisich led 94 of the 161 laps and looked to have the race won, until with 20 laps remaining he clipped privateer Mark Poole at the top of the Mountain. The punctured tyre ripped the front bodywork loose over the pit-entry kerbs, which then blocked the radiator. Radisich parked the Falcon on Mountain Straight, done with overheating. When the flag fell after nearly seven hours, the Gibson car had done enough.
This was Gibson Motorsport's third and final Bathurst win, following the dominant Nissan Skyline GT-R victories of 1991 and 1992 with Jim Richards and Mark Skaife. After a seven-year drought, the team was back on top. More importantly, it marked the start of Holden's record streak: seven straight Bathurst wins from 1999 to 2005, flowing through Garry Rogers Motorsport, HRT, K-Mart Racing and the HSV Dealer Team. It would prove to be Gibson's last Bathurst victory ever. The team switched to Ford in 2001.
Both winners were New Zealanders at a time when the Great Race felt like an Australian-only contest, and fittingly, so was the man they beat: Radisich. Their success foreshadowed the Kiwi invasion that would follow, from Fabian Coulthard to Shane van Gisbergen and Scott McLaughlin. The 1999 win was the opening chapter.
A November date instead of the traditional October slot, Dick Johnson's final Bathurst start, and the beginning of an era. The 1999 FAI 1000 changed Bathurst's trajectory.
