Ten Years of Heartbreak, One Mountain Finally Paid
October 13, 2013. Mount Panorama. The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, the first of the Car of the Future era, and the first time in fifteen years the grid carried anything but Falcons and Commodores, with Nissan back for the first time since 1998 and Mercedes-Benz since 1994.
Mark Winterbottom had been coming to this mountain since he was four years old. He'd raced it ten times and never once stood on the podium. And of all the wounds, 2007 bled longest: leading by 20 seconds with a dozen laps to go, he slid off at the Chase in the wet, his co-driver Steven Richards watching from the garage as a maiden win vanished.
Six years later, they came back to finish the job.
Winterbottom fluffed the start from the front row, but from there the drive was near-faultless. When the final pit cycle shook out, Winterbottom cycled back onto the track in front of pole-sitter Jamie Whincup on lap 138, all seven mandatory stops done, the win now in his hands to lose. He set about controlling the final forty laps of a race that had already smashed the record books: the winning time of 6:11:27.9 beat the old mark by 84 seconds.
Then came the finish Bathurst deserves once a decade. Whincup, four-time champion and series leader, closed onto the Pepsi Max Falcon. On the final lap he drew alongside into Griffins Bend, and slid wide. Winterbottom kept his foot in, crossed the line 0.47 seconds clear, and finally, after a decade of trying, held the Peter Brock Trophy.
The floodgates opened. Winterbottom's first. FPR's first, a factory Ford team that had gridded on the front row six times in seven years, yet hadn't stood on a Bathurst podium since 2004. Ford's first since 2008, and the first win for a factory-backed Ford since 1977. All of it landed within days after Ford re-signed its factory backing of FPR, against the backdrop of the announced end of Australian Falcon manufacturing by 2016. A farewell-era gift to every Ford fan watching.
For Steven Richards, son of seven-time winner Jim, it was a third Bathurst crown, his first in fourteen years, and proof the surname's magic worked in Falcons too. Behind them came Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff, sealing third on the weekend of Lowndes' twentieth Great Race appearance and his 500th championship outing.
Ten years of heartbreak. One final lap to fix it.
