The Mountain Wept: Lowndes Wins the First Peter Brock Trophy
Peter Brock, King of the Mountain and nine-time Bathurst winner, was killed in a rally accident on 8 September 2006. Exactly one month later, the biggest crowd in the event's history filled Mount Panorama to honour his memory. The inaugural Peter Brock Trophy was unveiled. And his protégé answered the call.
Craig Lowndes, paired with a 23-year-old Jamie Whincup in the #888 Triple Eight Ford BA Falcon, fought through a chaotic race to find himself in a final-stint duel with Rick Kelly. Lowndes held on. Winning by just 0.586 seconds, still among the closest finishes Bathurst has seen. Then he climbed the podium, accepted the first Peter Brock Trophy, and wept.
The victory was Whincup's breakthrough. He became the 51st driver to conquer the Great Race. For Lowndes, it ended a decade-long wait stretching back to his 1996 triumph with Greg Murphy. Triple Eight had finally claimed the Mountain, and Ford hadn't held the winner's trophy since 1998. Better still, they defended the crown in 2007 and 2008, joining Brock and Richards (1978–80) and Brock and Perkins (1982–84) as the only pairings to win three straight Bathurst 1000s.
