In 1994, a 20-year-old rookie named Craig Lowndes nearly won Bathurst - until the old fox Dick Johnson and his co-driver John Bowe held him off. Two years later, the kid came back and beat them.
The 1996 AMP Bathurst 1000 was a rain-soaked, seven-hour marathon. Six safety car periods. 35 cars. A field packed with every legend of the era - Brock, Skaife, Perkins, Ingall, Johnson, Bowe, Gardner. And at the front of it all, a 22-year-old Craig Lowndes and his 24-year-old co-driver Greg Murphy, driving the #1 Mobil Holden Racing Team VR Commodore that the specialist press had dubbed "The Supercar."
Days before the race, Lowndes had crashed a dirt bike. He needed stitches in his head and physiotherapy for a pinched nerve. He then needed to pass the pre-race medical. Then he went out and led 129 of 161 laps, set the fastest lap of the race on lap 149, and won by 19 seconds over Johnson and Bowe - the same pairing that had denied him two years earlier.
This was Lowndes' first Bathurst victory. He would go on to win seven. It was Murphy's first too - the Kiwi would claim four. Together, they became the youngest winning pairing in the race's history. And by sweeping the Australian Touring Car Championship, the Sandown 500, and the Bathurst 1000 in a single season, Lowndes joined his mentor Peter Brock as the only two drivers to ever achieve the Triple Crown.
Lowndes' teammate that day was Brock himself, in the #05 HRT Commodore. The King of the Mountain and his heir apparent, racing side by side for the Holden Racing Team. The old guard and the new. The baton was being passed...
