Last to First: The Drive That Defined a Career
The 1995 Tooheys 1000 was the first all-V8 Bathurst - no two-litre cars, no turbocharged imports, just 32 Holden and Ford V8s on the smallest grid the race had ever seen. And it produced one of the most legendary comeback drives Mount Panorama has ever witnessed.
Larry Perkins qualified third. But within seconds of the start, pole-sitter Craig Lowndes went into the Castrol Commodore, pulling the valve out of a front tyre. Perkins limped back to the pits. He dropped to second-last. Race over, most people thought.
They were wrong. Over the next 160 laps, Perkins and his co-driver Russell Ingall - affectionately known as "The Enforcer" - carved through the entire field. But the race wasn't theirs yet. Glenn Seton, leading in his Peter Jackson Ford EF Falcon with nine laps remaining, looked certain to finally claim the Bathurst victory that had eluded his family since his father Bo won in 1965. Then his engine gave out. A broken valve spring. Seton pulled off devastated.
Perkins pounced. He seized the lead and held it to the chequered flag - completing a charge from the back of the grid to the top step of the podium in 6 hours, 20 minutes and 32 seconds. It was Perkins' fifth Bathurst victory and Ingall's first. It was the drive that cemented "Lightning Larry" as a Bathurst immortal.
