The Rain, the Bloodline, and the Drive of a Lifetime

October 11, 2009. Mount Panorama. The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. Fine skies, a damp track, and a storm waiting in the wings.

Garth Tander had put the #2 Toll Holden Racing Team Commodore on pole with a 2:07.9463 lap. Beside him for the enduro season sat Will Davison, a new signing with a famous surname, chasing the biggest win of his career against a Team Vodafone juggernaut gunning for a record fourth straight Bathurst crown.

Then the mountain sorted the field its own way. Rain arrived with roughly a third of the race remaining. Superbike world champion Troy Bayliss, on his four-wheel debut, spun off at the Dipper and buried the car deep enough to trigger a safety car. Cars slid wide, sank into sand traps, and dragged themselves to the pits. Tander, running out front through all of it, simply refused to yield.

The run home became a rolling brawl across the top six. Jason Richards and Cameron McConville powered their Team BOC Commodore through to second, Lee Holdsworth and Michael Caruso took third, and Holden locked out the entire podium. Greg Murphy and Mark Skaife carried the heartbreak: their strategy had been flawless until a safety car with twenty laps left reshuffled everyone's pit windows, and they fell short of a stop by five seconds. Fourth place, and a long drive back to the garage.

For Ford, the era ended. Three straight wins (2006-08) for Whincup and Lowndes, gone in one wet afternoon. For Tander, it was a second Bathurst crown (2000, 2009). For Davison, it was the breakthrough, his first Great Race victory, trimming Jamie Whincup's championship lead to 93 points in a title fight that ran deep into the season.

And for the family scrapbook, it meant everything: grandson of Lex Davison, the four-time Australian Grand Prix winner, standing where Australian motorsport royalty stands. The bloodline had returned to the top step.
