The First Muscle Car Wins the Mountain: Where It All Began

Before the GTHO Phase IIIs. Before the Monaro GTS350. Before the Charger R/T. Before the term "muscle car" meant anything in Australia - there was the Ford XR Falcon GT.

Seven of them lined up at Mount Panorama on 1 October 1967, the first Australian-built V8 Falcons to contest the great race. The XR GT was born from a police interceptor program evaluated for the Victorian Police, fitted with a 289 cubic-inch V8 producing 225 horsepower, and built for one purpose: to win at Bathurst. Only 596 were made. This was homologation racing at its purest.

Harry Firth - driver, engineer, and mastermind - qualified second alongside co-driver Fred Gibson in the #52 Ivy Green Falcon GT. For 130 laps and 500 miles, they waged a race-long duel against their factory teammates Ian and Leo Geoghegan in the sister #53 car, and a pack of Alfa Romeo 1600 GTVs that refused to go quietly. Four cars finished on the same lap. The margin was 11 seconds.

But the finish was chaos. A lap-scoring error saw the Geoghegan brothers flagged as winners. Gibson, who hadn't been shown the chequered flag, was forced to complete another lap. Firth was livid. He protested immediately. It wasn't until later that evening - hours after the chequered flag - that the results were corrected and Firth and Gibson were installed as the rightful winners.

It was Firth's fourth 500 victory, equalling Bob Jane's record. It was Gibson's first. And it was the Falcon GT's first ever win in competition - the moment that launched the Australian muscle car wars. Ford, Holden and Chrysler would spend the next decade building ever-faster, ever-wilder machines to conquer the mountain. It all started here.

The winning car was clocked at 125.69 mph on Conrod Straight - the fastest speed ever recorded by a series production car at Bathurst at that time. All seven Falcon GTs finished the race, though one was later excluded for a technical infringement. It was a debut so dominant it changed the sport.
