One Stop. One Set Of Tyres. One Mountain Conquered.

Modern Bathurst winners pit for fuel around half a dozen times. In 1965, Barry "Bo" Seton and Midge Bosworth needed just one - and rode a single set of tyres across 130 laps and 7 hours, 16 minutes to take the Armstrong 500.

Their weapon was the first true "Bathurst special": the Ford Cortina Mk.I GT500, a race-developed homologation car built for the top price class and literally named for the race distance. But the factory badge counted for nothing on race day - the Ford works Geoghegan brothers entry faltered, and the outright win went to a privateer: the Fairfield Motors entry from Sydney, run leaner, lighter and smarter than anything from the works.

When the flag fell, Seton crossed the line clear of Bruce McPhee and Barry Mulholland's similar GT500, with the mighty Cooper S of Foley and Manton third, left chasing small-car honours. It was proof, right at the birth of the Great Race, that Bathurst rewards cunning as much as horsepower.

The winning car survives today at the National Motor Racing Museum, parked within sight of Hell Corner where it all began. And the family name became Bathurst royalty: son Glenn, a two-time national champion, chased the Mountain for decades; grandson Aaron returned to the Great Race in 2025 - sixty years after Bo's triumph, on the very anniversary weekend. Bo Seton, who passed away in April 2026 aged 89, leaves a dynasty measured in generations.
