Three Laps From Glory
In 1985, the ground shifted at Mount Panorama. The old Group C bangers were gone, and for the first time the Great Race ran under international Group A rules, open to the world. Tom Walkinshaw arrived with his fleet of V12 Jaguar XJ-Ss and Schnitzer's BMW 635CSi came with European credentials. For the first time in living memory, nobody could say who owned the Mountain.
Peter Brock's weapon was the blue-and-white Mobil Holden Dealer Team VK Commodore, powered by the 4.9-litre V8. The engine sat just under the 5000cc class limit, which let the Commodore run 75 kilograms lighter than the bigger-engined Jaguars. Sharing the cockpit was New Zealand open-wheel racer David Oxton, drafted after Brock and long-time partner Larry Perkins went separate ways mid-season. Down on power, the #05 would have to win on pace, nerve and tyre wear.
The race was a slow-building charge. The sister HDT Commodore of John Harvey and David Parsons expired with a broken timing chain at half distance. Brock pressed on, hauling the #05 to second behind John Goss's leading Jaguar, cutting the deficit lap after lap as the race ran down. Though with three laps to go he remained roughly thirty seconds adrift. Then, with three laps remaining, the #05's single-row timing chain let go. The engine fell silent, and with it the chance at a fourth straight Bathurst win.
John Goss and Armin Hahne took the victory in the Jaguar, the first time since 1966 that neither Ford nor Holden had won the Great Race, when a Mini Cooper S ruled the Mountain. But ask anyone who was there. The car they still talk about is the blue Commodore that hunted a V12 to the flag and never got to finish the job.
