Saturday night, Mount Panorama, Top 10 Shootout. Greg Murphy's #51 K-Mart Commodore VY turned a lap nobody thought possible: 2:06.8594, the first sub-2:07 in Bathurst history. It became known as the "Lap of the Gods", and it stood as the Mount Panorama lap record for seven years until 2010.
The next day, Murphy did what he'd done so many times before: convert pole position into victory. Alongside a young Rick Kelly, Murphy led 100 of the 161 laps in a dominant K-Mart Racing performance. The Holden streak stretched to five straight wins, a new record at the time. Kelly became the youngest driver to win the Great Race, breaking Craig Lowndes' 1996 mark. Murphy claimed his third Bathurst crown, equaling Allan Moffat and Mark Skaife at the time.
The race wasn't without controversy. Mark Skaife and Todd Kelly were running second, only to be handed a five-minute penalty in the closing laps when their passenger door dislodged during contact with John Bowe. Officials sent Skaife back to the pits for taping, enough to drop them to eighth place and hand the final podium spot to Steve Ellery and Luke Youlden. Skaife called it unfair, saying the door was already broken when Bowe hit it, but the rule was the rule.
The winning car? HRT Chassis 043, built by the Holden Racing Team but running under K-Mart colours that season. It had previously won the 2000 Queensland 500 in Lowndes/Skaife hands before being upgraded to VY spec in 2003. Murphy's historic pole lap was set in this very chassis, a car now rumoured to approach seven figures in collector value (V8 Sleuth, 2023).
