Nine Cars. One Mountain. All Minis.
The 1966 Gallaher 500 wasn't a race - it was a rout. And the weapon wasn't a thundering V8, but a 1,275cc Morris Mini Cooper S.
While the big-bore machinery of the era boiled its brakes and burned its tyres across seven hours and 130 laps, a swarm of Cooper Ss simply kept going. And going. When the flag fell at Mount Panorama, Minis occupied the first nine outright positions - the most complete single-model domination in the race's history. The best of the rest, a Chrysler VC Valiant V8 automatic, trailed home in tenth, six laps adrift.
At the head of the armada sat car #13 - the BMC (Australia) works entry shared by Finnish rally star Rauno Aaltonen, one of Europe's fastest men on any surface, and Sydney Mini specialist Bob Holden, whose obsessive overnight preparation reportedly rescued a car the works team knew was down on power. Together they finished a full lap clear of Fred Gibson and Bill Stanley's Cooper S, with Bruce McPhee and Barry Mulholland's similar car completing the podium.
Fitting, somehow, that a man named Holden won Bathurst in a car built by BMC - and fitting that the car wearing superstitious #13 outlasted everything faster than it. Smaller, lighter, smarter: the philosophy that beat the giants in 1966 still defines the Mini faithful sixty years later.
