The King's Last Dance
In November 2003, Peter Brock returned to Mount Panorama for what would prove to be his final win at the circuit that made him. Aged 58, the nine-time Great Race winner joined V8 Supercar stars Greg Murphy, Jason Bright and Todd Kelly in Garry Rogers Motorsport's monstrous red #05 Holden Monaro 427C for the Bathurst 24 Hour. The result was the most emotional victory the Mountain could have scripted.
The opposition was world class: the Ferrari 360 of David Brabham, John Bowe's BMW M3 GTR V8, Paul Stokell's Lamborghini Diablo GTR, the Martin Short Mosler and a fleet of Porsches. None of them could touch the Monaros. After 24 hours and 527 laps, Murphy took the chequered flag barely a third of a second ahead of the team's own 2002-winning sister car, a Holden one-two that left the third-placed Porsche twelve laps behind.
The Monaro itself divided opinion. Its 7.0-litre, 427-cubic-inch V8 gave it a power advantage nothing in the field could answer, and Jim Richards famously quipped it was essentially "a better V8 Supercar". Controversial, dominant, unforgettable. For Brock, it counted as a tenth Bathurst win, and it stands in the record books as his final Bathurst victory, the last time the King of the Mountain stood on the top step.
Today the winning Monaro is preserved and regularly displayed at the National Motor Racing Museum at Mount Panorama. This is the shirt that honours it, and the legend whose name it carried to victory.
