The Fallen Kings

Twelve months earlier, Allan Moffat and Jacky Ickx had made Bathurst history: a Ford 1-2 finish in the XC Falcon hardtops, with the Belgian Le Mans master winning Australia's Great Race at his very first attempt. Ford's answer was the Falcon Cobra road car, four hundred white-and-blue specials with a Shelby-inspired paint job, named and marketed to cash in on the 1-2 that had just made Moffat a household name.

Then Moffat's team went one better. For 1978, the winning race car itself was updated to Cobra specification, and Ickx returned for the defence.

At the 1978 Hardie-Ferodo 1000, the champions showed their class. Moffat's #1 XC Falcon Cobra set the fastest lap of the race, a 2:22.0 around Mount Panorama. But 1978 was a day of merciless attrition. By lap 81, both Moffat Cobras were out: the #1 car stricken after a refuelling fire and a loss of oil pressure, the #2 lost to engine trouble. Both Ron Hodgson Toranas had also retired, and Peter Brock and Jim Richards cruised home in the Torana A9X to begin their own era of domination. The old king's reign was over; everyone could see the succession except the men in the blue oval pits.

It was the end of the XC hardtop's story at the front of Bathurst, and it began three years of heartbreak for Moffat: retirements in 1978, 1979 and 1980, each one traced back to the engine bay, before he turned to Mazda. But the Cobra legend had already escaped the racetrack. Ford's road-going special became one of the most collectible Australian muscle cars ever built, largely because Moffat's race cars adopted its paintwork in late 1978 and welded the two together in the public imagination.
