The Day Ford Swept The Frozen Mountain

Long before there was a Bathurst 1000 trophy, there was Bob Jane - and in 1964 nobody could touch him.

The Armstrong 500 that October was run in the vilest weather the race had ever seen: freezing, wet, miserable - a production-car endurance test at its most brutal. The Ford works Cortina GTs were built for exactly this, their front disc brakes outlasting the drum-shod opposition as the mountain punished everything heavier and blunter.

The result was a massacre. Bob Jane and George Reynolds crossed the line first, with the works cars of Jane and Harry Firth sandwiching the Fairfield Motors privateer of Barry Seton and Herb Taylor in second - the same little Sydney team that would win the race outright twelve months later. Cortinas filled six of the top ten places. The early pacesetter, the Geoghegan brothers' works Cortina, led until a broken generator bracket cost them 15 minutes mid-race. By the final 50 laps, Jane's fourth line-honours win in as many years was never in doubt.

An era footnote that makes this win oddly noble: the organisers of the day recognised class winners only - the outright result was history's judgement call, settled long after the flag. Everyone trackside knew anyway. And Jane, the man who would become an Australian tyre-retailing titan, owned the mountain's early years like no driver since: four straight line-honours wins across three different models - a Mercedes, a Falcon, then the Cortina twice - unbeaten from 1961 to 1964.
