Seven in a Row: Holden's Golden Age Peaks at the Mountain
From 1999 to 2005, nobody could touch Holden at Bathurst. Seven consecutive victories. The longest winning streak by any manufacturer in the race's history. And in 2005, Mark Skaife, the man whose face had defined the HRT dynasty, delivered what felt like the crowning blow.
Skaife started fourth on the grid in the #2 Mobil 1 Holden Racing Team VZ Commodore, alongside co-driver Todd Kelly. The race was pure chaos. A late-race crash at the Cutting that wiped out defending champion Greg Murphy and championship leader Marcos Ambrose, a field that shredded itself over six hours, and safety car after safety car bunching the pack back together. Through it all, Skaife and Kelly led 81 of 161 laps.
With 20 laps remaining, Skaife made his move on the Tasman Motorsport Commodore of Jason Richards, a young charger paired with an even younger Jamie Whincup. Skaife pulled away. The margin at the chequered flag: 2.49 seconds. Holden's seventh straight. Skaife's fifth Bathurst. And Kelly's first, claimed on his 26th birthday, making him the 50th driver to win the Great Race.
Todd followed his younger brother Rick to the top step. Rick had won back-to-back in 2003 and 2004. The Kellys became the first brothers to each win the V8 Supercars Bathurst 1000. The Brabhams had won together as co-drivers in the separate Super Touring race of 1997, but the Kellys did it in the same era, in the same machinery, against the same field.
For Skaife, this was his last Bathurst triumph in HRT colours, and the closing chapter of his own reign with the team. His career tally stands at six: 1991 and 1992 in the Nissan Skyline GT-R, 2001, 2002 and 2005 with the Holden Racing Team, and one final win in 2010 alongside Craig Lowndes at Triple Eight, in different colours altogether. Few careers have spanned the Godzilla era, the birth of V8 Supercars, and the HRT dynasty. His did.
