The 1992 Tooheys 1000 wasn't just a race - it was a reckoning. Jim Richards and Mark Skaife had dominated the field in their Gibson Motorsport Nissan Skyline GT-R #1, controlling proceedings from the start. Then, with just 18 laps remaining, a violent thunderstorm swallowed Mount Panorama.
Richards, on slick tyres, lost grip and hit the wall. The car was wrecked. The race was red-flagged on lap 144. But under the rules, results were wound back to the last fully completed lap - lap 143 - when Richards and Skaife were still leading. They were declared winners in a car that sat crumpled on the back of a tow truck.
The crowd erupted. Ford and Holden fans hurled beer cans at the podium. What they didn't know was that Richards had been told his close friend and former F1 World Champion driver Denny Hulme had died of a heart attack on Conrod Straight during the race. Grieving, furious, and faced with a hail of cans, Richards delivered the line that would echo through Australian motorsport forever: "You're a pack of arseholes."
