The Tyre Gamble That Conquered The Mountain

Torrential rain. Safety cars stacking the field. Factory teams dropping like flies. The 2000 FAI 1000 at Mount Panorama was a survival test disguised as a motor race - the slowest-winning-average-speed Great Race since 1974.

And standing tallest at the end of it was the last team anyone expected.

Garth Tander and Jason Bargwanna had won Bathurst precisely zero times between them. Their boss, Garry Rogers, had spent decades chasing the Mountain without a win. Yet on 19 November 2000, the #34 Valvoline Cummins Commodore VT of the privateer GRM squad led 17 laps of the 161.

The race turned on nerve and weather. As the track flickered between soaked and drying, GRM made the call to switch from wets to slicks at the exact critical moment, stacked with fuel. While HRT's challenge was wounded amid contact in the famous Matt Neal midfield chaos on lap 114, Tander rounded up Jason Bright's Shell DJR Falcon at Reid Park - then withstood Paul Radisich's late charge to the flag. When the flag fell after 7 hours, 23 minutes and 30 seconds, the margin was barely two seconds - Radisich and Jason Bright second, defending winners Steven Richards and Greg Murphy dragging their battered Commodore home third, less than a second clear of Steven Johnson.

For Tander, then 23, it was proof of arrival - the first of what became six Great Race victories spanning three decades, through 2009, 2011, 2020, 2022 and his most unlikely triumph in 2025, from 18th on the grid at 48 years of age. For Bargwanna, gritty reliability finally paid off. And for Garry Rogers Motorsport, it remains, more than a quarter-century later, the team's one and only Bathurst win.
