Larry Perkins Is God: The First V8 Era Win
The 1993 Tooheys 1000 didn't just produce a winner - it birthed an era. Group A was gone. Godzilla was banned. The new Australian V8 regulations limited the field to Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons, and the rivalry that would define the next three decades of Supercars racing was born.
Larry Perkins didn't care about any of that. He was a genuine privateer, building his own cars in his own workshop, running a Holden V8 engine when every other Holden team had switched to Chevrolets. He took pole position with a 2:13.013 lap, then drove the #11 Castrol VP Commodore to victory alongside co-driver Gregg Hansford - completing all 161 laps in 6 hours, 29 minutes and 6.69 seconds.
The crowd lost their minds. A banner appeared under the podium: "Larry Perkins is God." The chants of "Larry, Larry, Larry" rang across the mountain.
This was the last time a Holden V8 engine would win at Bathurst. It was Perkins' fourth Bathurst victory (after three with Peter Brock at HDT) and the first with his own team. For Hansford - a motorcycle Grand Prix legend with 10 GP wins and two 250cc world championship runner-up finishes - it made him the only person to conquer Mount Panorama on both two wheels and four.
