The Day The Mountain Became Home To The Great Race
Before 1963, there was no Bathurst. The Armstrong 500 had been held at Phillip Island since 1960, but when the circuit deteriorated, the race found a new home - Mount Panorama. And on 6 October 1963, the first Great Race at the Mountain forever changed Australian motorsport.
The works Ford Cortina GT of Bob Jane and Harry Firth - the defending race winners from 1962 - conquered the inaugural Mount Panorama event. They crossed the line first over the full 130-lap distance, taking Class C honours and an unofficial line-honours victory by a full lap over the best Holden, driven by Ralph Sach and Fred Morgan in the EH S4.
This was Jane's third consecutive line-honours win at the 500-mile classic (he would complete the four-peat in 1964), and it marked the beginning of the Ford vs Holden rivalry that would become the backbone of Australian touring car racing for three decades. The first Bathurst was won by Ford, with a level of intensity that set the tone for what was to come.
For Harry Firth - who would go on to run the Holden Dealer Team and become one of the most influential figures in Australian motorsport - this was just the beginning of a legendary career. For Bob Jane, it was another chapter in a dynasty that would make him an Australian racing icon.
