The First V8 Supercars Bathurst: Perkins' Sixth and Final
In 1997, Australian touring car racing tore itself in two. A bitter split between AVESCO and the Super Touring consortium produced two separate 1000km races at Mount Panorama. The 2-litre cars ran first. Two weeks later, the V8 Supercars had the mountain to themselves. And the race that would become the spiritual ancestor of every modern Bathurst 1000 was born.
Larry Perkins had no time for politics. He cared about winning. From fourth on the grid, he charged alongside Peter Brock into second on the opening lap - side by side up Mountain Straight - and went on to set a new lap record on just the fifth tour of the mountain. By race's end, Perkins and Russell Ingall had led 80 of 161 laps, claimed the fastest lap, and established a new V8 Supercar average speed record of 157.14 km/h that would stand for years.
The margin was 11 seconds over Jim Richards and his son Steven - a father-son pairing on the Bathurst podium. Third went to Mark Larkham and Andrew Miedecke. It was a Holden 1-2 on the podium. And it was Perkins' sixth and final Bathurst victory - the last hurrah of one of the mountain's greatest conquerors.
This was also Peter Brock's farewell to full-time racing. The King of the Mountain led the first lap in his HRT Commodore, racing side by side with a man already firmly etched on the mountain's roll of honour. Brock wouldn't win this one. He wouldn't race at Bathurst full-time again. But he was there, at the front, one last time.
