The Prodigal Son Returns: Brock's HRT Comeback

Seven years after his bitter split from Holden, Peter Brock came back to the factory fold.

The detour hurt. A season in BMW M3s, then two in Ford Sierras. Three more seasons back in Commodores, first alongside Larry Perkins, then running his own Advantage Racing squad, competitive but on the outside looking in. Then, for 1994, the deal every Holden fan wanted: Brock in the factory Holden Racing Team, Mobil sponsorship and the famous #05 in tow, wearing the red, white and blue.

The reunion delivered. A first championship round win for HRT at Eastern Creek, the team's breakthrough after years of underachievement. Third in the title chase behind Mark Skaife and Glenn Seton. And a returning hero with The General firmly behind him once more.

Then came Bathurst. The 1994 Tooheys 1000, a race Wheels magazine would later vote the greatest Bathurst of them all. It started in some of the wettest conditions the Mountain had seen. The lead changed hands 25 times. In the sister HRT Commodore, a 20-year-old rookie named Craig Lowndes announced himself to the country, passing John Bowe around the outside at Griffins Bend and threatening to win the lot.

And Peter Brock, chasing a tenth Bathurst crown and a reported $100,000 bonus, pushed hard. On lap 138, near the top of the Mountain, the #05 Mobil VP Commodore slid into the barriers. The comeback ended in the fence, Bowe and Dick Johnson took a famous Ford win, and a young Lowndes fell just short in his first Great Race.

A win? No. A legend? Absolutely. This is the car that marked Brock's return to the factory fold, the bridge between the HDT golden era and the HRT dynasty that followed.
