Street Tyres, Factory Defeat: The Impossible Win
In 1968, Bruce McPhee didn't just win the Hardie-Ferodo 500 - he rewrote the rulebook. Driving a privately entered Holden HK Monaro GTS 327 for Wyong Motors, McPhee chose ordinary street tyres over racing slicks while the factory teams loaded up with softer rubber that wore out fast. The strategy paid off spectacularly - no pit stops, consistent pace, and a historic victory.
This was Holden's first-ever outright Bathurst win - ending Ford's early dominance and announcing the Monaro as a legitimate contender. The GTS 327s filled the top three positions outright, with McPhee's Warwick Yellow #13 car leading the sweep. Remarkably, McPhee drove almost the entire 130-lap race - co-driver Barry Mulholland completed just one lap mid-race. The Monaro's debut had arrived with a statement.
