The Car Swap: How Three Drivers Made Bathurst History

Lap 8 of the 1983 James Hardie 1000, and catastrophe. Peter Brock's brand-new #05 Marlboro Holden Dealer Team Commodore - on pole, its drivers reigning champions from twelve months earlier - blew its engine. The defending champions were out. Game over.

Except it wasn't. Because HDT had a second car.  And it already had a Bathurst history.

John Harvey was running second in the #25 Commodore when the team called him in. Out came Harvey. In climbed Brock and Perkins - and before the day was done, Harvey would return to the cockpit to share in the spoils. Three drivers, one car - legal under the regulations, but ruthless beyond belief. Phil Brock, who had helped qualify the car, was left to spectate as his three teammates won the race in the car he'd helped put on the grid. The decision - attributed to team manager Larry Perkins - would split the Brock brothers for years.

Brock and Perkins along with Harvey, worked their way into the lead and cruised home more than a full lap ahead of Allan Moffat and Yoshimi Katayama's Peter Stuyvesant Mazda RX-7 - the closest Mazda would ever come to winning the Great Race. Third went to Allan Grice and Colin Bond in the STP Roadways Commodore.

The history books record this as one of the most significant performances ever seen at Mount Panorama. The #25 VH Commodore SS was the very car Brock and Perkins had driven to victory in 1982, updated to 1983 specification. With this win, it became the first car in history to win the Bathurst 1000 twice. It was also the first winning car crewed by three drivers. And for Peter Brock, it was a record seventh Bathurst victory - the middle leg of his second hat-trick (1982, 1983, 1984), this one achieved with the Marlboro HDT.  Another contribution to his King of the Mountain status.

Controversial? Absolutely. Legal? Completely. Legendary? Forever.
